EuroScience Open Forum 2022 Regional Site conference in Katowice as a part of the celebration of the European City of Science 2022, which is the Netherlands city of Leiden, the Euro Science Open Forum (ESOF) 2022 scientific conference will be held in Leiden from 13 to 16 July 2022.
At the same time, in Katowice – a city preparing to accept the title of the European City of Science 2024 – on July 15, 2022, the accompanying conference of ESOF 2022 Regional Site is planned. The meeting will be held at the International Congress Center. The leitmotifs of the conference in Katowice will be: crossing borders, engaged science, resistant societies.
The issues include:
- what will be the science of the future and how can science improve its functionality as a subject of transformation that leads to a change in society?
- how can science be fully open and cross the borders, science disciplines and societies?
- what are the future behaviors, values, expectations, attitudes and norms of the research community
- what will be the impact of artificial intelligence and machine learning on the research community and scientific practice?
- science in the face of war and its consequences.
Session topics will include areas such as: sustainable environment, cultural identity and social transformations, space for learning, healthy society, freedom and responsibility of science towards society, action-based economic education going off the beaten track: new paths in an academic career.
How can science be conducted in the future and how can science improve its functionality.

The program of the conference in the International Congress Centre in Katowice includes twelve 75-minute on-site sessions, four of which will be streamed online to Leiden. The representatives of Polish and foreign science centers, experts representing business, cultural institutions, and the media were invited to the discussion.
Katowice is the first city in Central and Eastern Europe with the title of European City of Science. The successful efforts are the result of a joint effort by the City of Katowice and the academic community, with the University of Silesia at the forefront of the consortium of universities in the region. Organizational support was declared by the authorities of the Śląskie Voivodeship and the Metropolis GZM.
The institution granting the title and organizing the ESOF conference is EuroScience (European Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology). EuroScience is the largest pan-European association of researchers and scientists.
EuroScience Open Forum is a pan-European hybrid event engaging in dialogue on science, technology, politics and society. It is a platform for the exchange of experiences and presentation of the latest scientific achievements, innovation and technological development. The ESOF brand attracts scientists, politicians, businessmen and media representatives from around the world to host cities. The title of the European City of Science makes it possible to increase the involvement of the inhabitants of the region and the scientific community in solving local problems, it also strengthens the possibilities of getting the funds for the implementation of investment plans in regional science, increase the tourist attractiveness of the city on the international arena and allows for increasing the impact of local universities on all spheres of life and increases their recognizability in the international arena.
